A difficult afternoon saw Cardiff City Ladies fall to defeat at Rugby Borough

Report by Matt Priest

Goals from Katy Morris, Angelina Nixon and Lily Greenslade saw 3rd place Rugby Borough defeat Cardiff City Ladies 3-0.

The game started off slowly with both teams being caught offside within the first 10 minutes.

The first chance of the game forced a save at the near post by Laura O’Sullivan after a low driven shot had looked like it may challenge the keeper.

Nicky Potts put a close range volley over the bar after a high cross troubled the Cardiff defence in the 20th minute.

The chances started coming in for Rugby Borough but saves by O’Sullivan kept the score level.

A period of sustained pressure from the visitors couldn’t be capitalised on as Ebony Wiseman put a long range effort over the bar.

Chloe Lloyd’s long ball from a free-kick in the 43rd minute was the first challenge for Borough keeper Erin Foley.

Morris broke the deadlock in the 45th minute with a low driven shot after Sam Curwood-Wagner beat two defenders and cut in from the right wing.

Rugby doubled their lead in the 49th minute after Nixon’s shot found the bottom corner of the net.

Greenslade increased the hosts lead to three shortly after, with a sublime curling effort into the top corner, beating O’Sullivan in the 55th minute.

A sustained period of pressure from Cardiff around the hour mark forced a pair of good saves from Foley.

Minutes later, Borough captain Wiseman shook the crossbar with a powerful shot.

The crossbar was hit again with another effort from Nixon shortly after.

Emily Richards came on in the 75th minute marking her first appearance in over 12 months after suffering an ACL injury.

Some strong defending in the final minutes by Cardiff closed the game out 3-0.

Cardiff’s next game is at home to Billericay on the 4th of February.
