A league encounter for the first time this season with Barry and we knew this would be a very competitive and hard fought match from the start which we were really looking forward to. This proved to be the case, with Cardiff gaining ground in possession and attacks first with Evan going close 3 times quickly on. The pressure told, allowing Cardiff to take the lead in the 6th minute. Seren won the ball in midfield, turned her marker and closely dribbled the ball past a couple of players placing a perfect shot into the back of the net to put us ahead in the game by 1-0. We should of pushed on from there, but in a blink of an eye and in a mad 10 minutes we found ourselves 3-1 down. Our goal seemed to spur Barry on and they mounted a few attacks on our goal, with missed tackles and a ball that may or may not of dribbled over the line we knew we were in a fantastic battle and at this point it looked like it was going to be an uphill struggle from here on in. Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, we changed a few things around, rolled our sleeves up and started again. With lovely flowing football, we started to find space and our passes. In a flowing run Savanna ran through midfield and took on the defence, turned and passed to Seren who slotted the ball through to Renee. Renee took a shot which came back off the defender straight to her feet again to allow her to take another shot on goal, this time it alluded the keeper and crossed the line for a goal to make it 3-2 to Barry.
Our growing confidence and pressure started to force Barry backwards and a goal kick from the barry keeper landed at Nevaehs feet in our own half of the field. She put an inch perfect ball over the opposition defence for Savanna to run onto the ball and hit the back of the net with her first touch, shot to make the score 3-3 at half time.
With 6 goals in one half it was hard to see what the second half would produce as it had been a great advert of football so far. It was pretty even in the first 10 mins with both teams working hard, playing some great football and neither team not wanting to settle for a draw. But, you could see the game turn slightly with Cardiff winning key balls and tackles through midfield and out wide and the pressure forced Barry to conceed a free kick. Ffion took the free kick from just inside Barrys half, firing the ball straight down the middle of the goal for it to rebound back out from a defender to Charlie, who challenged the loose ball to fire in the goal for Cardiff to go in front making the score 4-3. This was a great turn around from a very determined and hard working Cardiff team and we weren’t going to stop there and just play the game out. At this point the game was still end to end when Seren picked up the ball just inside Barrys half, ran through two midfielders and a defender to fire a shot from a little way out down the centre of the goal making it 5-3 and that being the final goal and result until the end of the game.
We won the game today through an all round great team performance and a will not to give up when even at a point that it seemed an uphill struggle. It was a great advert for girls football from both teams giving their all in a very competitive game. Fantastic from every single player today and a pleasure to witness 👏👏
