A break from the league this week as we take on a strong Tredegar Town side in a Cup game. The game started at a fast pace as expected and Cardiff were quickly into their rhythm with a few quick shots on goal to test the keeper early on. Despite a lot of possession, we could not score, near misses a plenty, but the ball kept going agonisely just wide. Tredegar continued to battle back and putting attacks together to put us under pressure resulting in them scoring the first goal. Cardiff never gave up despite things not going our way, they kept working hard, trying different things and eventually finally got their just rewards, a minute before half time. With our POTM match Grace tirelessly battling to win every ball, attacking and taking on 4 players, she had a shot which rebounded for Renee to pounce on, take a shot and score to make it 1-1 at half time.
We knew we needed to be focused and start the second half alert and dictate play from the off. We couldn’t of started any quicker than the 1st minute of play, whereby Seren intercepted a pass in midfield, controlled the ball, took one look up and fired the ball with force from distance straight into the back of the net, leaving the keeper rooted to the spot to make the score 2-1.
Tredegar kept battling and mounted a few attacks of their own but our defence more than controlled the outcome with many of our own attacks starting from the back and passed through our midfield. Winning a corner which Nevaeh put into the danger area for Seren to pick out, control and fire into a crowded goal and see her shot go into the back of the net to make it 3-1. With confidence high, everything tried that didnt work in the 1st half seemed to now work and some of the football played was fantastic to witness. Keeping the pressure on, a quick long throw by Lexi down the line to Meg who did a 1-2 back to Lexi, who turned into midfield and placed a ball into the path of Grace, who turned the defender and fired the ball into the right hand bottom corner of the goal to make it 4-1. Some great teamwork, shots and near misses on goal from Ffion, Meg, Sienna kept the pressure on and the girls never give up attitude despite the score, was there for all to see. In the last two minutes of play, Cardiff were still mounting attacks and it paid off again when a through ball from midfield into the opposition defensive danger area saw Evan pick up the pass, control the ball and calmly put it into the back of the net to make the final score 5-1.
A great battling performance by every single player, who had to keep their discipline throughout and keep confidence high. Onto the Semi finals next!
