Heartbreak for Cardiff City Ladies as they fall to an unfortunate defeat against league leaders Portsmouth Women 2-1 after two late goals handed the visitors the spoils.

A brace from Emma Jones provided the visitors with the three points after a sublime finish by Ellie Sargent put Cardiff ahead.

A few early crosses for Portsmouth within the opening 10 minutes saw Georgie Freeland’s close range volley skimming wide of the post.

Jessie Taylor provided Cardiff with their first chance of the game in the 19th minute but her header went astray.

A very even first half saw both teams have their fair share of shots but both keepers managed to keep the ball out of their respective nets making it 0-0 going into the half.

Portsmouth started the second half on the front foot but some great defence from Cardiff kept the visitors at bay.

A handful of saves around the hour mark from Laura O’Sullivan denied Portsmouth from opening the score.

Freeland hit the post from a direct corner in the 59th minute, the closest chance either team has been to scoring.

Another fantastic diving save by O’Sullivan in the 65th kept the score level after tipping Ali Hall’s close range effort over the bar.

Ellie Sargent opened the scoring in the 71st minute with a clinical finish in off the post after a sublime counter attack started by Chloe Lloyd.

Portsmouth equalised shortly after as Emma Jones slotted a close range effort past Laura O’Sullivan in the 84th minute.

Jones then added to her tally with a second goal shortly after to put the visitors in front.

A freekick deep into added time provided hope but Tianna Teisar’s shot was cleared off the line on what turned out to by the last kick of the game.

Thank you everyone that attended today’s game!

Cardiff’s next game is against Plymouth at home on the 10th of March.
