Cardiff City LFC vs Hashtag United Women Preview

Cardiff City Ladies return to league action on Sunday when they welcome in-form Hashtag United Women to the Newport Stadium (2pm kick off).

The Dragons will take to the field in the FAWNL Southern Premier for the first time at their new home and for the first time in over a month, after successive cup outings.

The visiting ‘Tags can go top of the table with a win thanks to a blistering start to the season, which sees them level on points with leaders Portsmouth.

Opposition focus

Hashtag United join Cardiff as a newly promoted side in the division after winning the FAWNL Division One South-East title last season.

Formed as part of a merger with AFC Basildon in 2021, the Women’s team claimed the Essex Senior cup in their inaugural season, before going on to taste silverware again last season with the league title.

The Essex-based outfit have enjoyed a successful start to life in the third tier, winning eight of their first nine matches and scoring 20 goals in the process.

Hashtag can thank striker Sammy Rowland for her part in their fantastic league form. Last season’s Women’s FA Cup golden ball winner has netted seven times already this season as she looks to better last season’s tally of 26.

The team’s captain Grace Gillard recently became the club’s all-time appearance maker, reaching a tally of 111 matches (including 31 pre-merger). She managed 15 goals of her own last season as she skippered the side to title success.

Dragons looking to get back on track

The Dragons will hope to put distance between themselves and the relegation zone with a result, as the rest of the league turn to Women’s FA Cup action this weekend.

The Dragons sit two points above the drop zone and just three points behind Billericay Town and Plymouth Argyle, with games in hand over both.

‘City last tasted victory with an impressive 4-0 win against London Bees at the beginning of October, drawing once and suffering defeat once in the league since then.

A brace apiece for Ellie Sargent and Cori Williams handed the team their second win of the campaign as part of a four-game unbeaten streak, the kind of form that they will be hoping to return to – starting this weekend.

O’Sullivan called up to Wales squad

Dragons keeper Laura O’Sullivan has once again been selected in Gemma Grainger’s Wales squad for their UEFA Women’s Nations League group stage matches against Iceland and Germany.

Laura joins fellow goalkeepers Olivia Clark (Bristol City) and Safia Middleton-Patel (Manchester United) in the 27-strong squad.

Wales host Iceland at Cardiff City Stadium on Friday 1stDecember (7.15PM ko) before welcoming Germany to the Swansea.com Stadium on Tuesday 5th December (6.30PM ko).

The visitors come into the game with three wins in their last five games in all competitions, while Cardiff are looking for a change in fortunes after three consecutive defeats.
