The red, white and black scarves were out in full force for the first home game in a few weeks for Cardiff City Ladies’ senior team. We faced Selsey in the FAWNL, hunting for a win as we keep pressure on for the league top spot.
The game was cagey, with Cardiff having large spells of possession and good play but the sentinels in Selsey’s defence stayed resolute at the back, cutting out long balls and challenging in 1v1s against Morgan, Sargent and Cori and Laura Williams.
Our number 1, Laura O’Sullivan, was forced to make a couple of world class saves in the first half. As half time drew nearer we saw more good play down both flanks, with midfield and attack combining well but unable to produce a goal.
The score at half time was 0-0, and the Dragons ran quickly to the changing rooms to discuss how to ensure the 3 points stayed in Wales.
The crowd were made to wait until 67 minutes for some joy, in the form of a header from Grace Seren which deflected off a Selsey defender and into the back of the net.
Cardiff tried to settle the game, but the visitors stepped up a gear and the game became very physical, with free kicks being awarded for both teams with increased frequency.
Fortunately, Selsey had little by way of firepower and struggled to pull off many shots. The game ended with a victory and 3 points for Cardiff, with just the one goal to separate the two sides.
Grace Seren was awarded player of the match by Her Game Too.
Thanks all who came down for your support – our next home game is on 30th April against Southampton.
