The spoils were shared between Cardiff City Ladies FC and London Bees 2-2 in a tight encounter in the FAWNL

Report by Matt Priest

Goals from Emily Poole and TJ Gauvain were not quite enough as Cardiff City Ladies started 2024 with a draw at home to London Bees.

The opening 10 minutes saw plenty of action with Grace Horrell-Thomas’ shot, which went over the bar, being the best of the first few chances.

Cardiff City Ladies saw the better of the opportunities in the first 20 minutes but were never quite able to find the back of the net after a sustained period of attack.

Kayla Potter broke the deadlock in the 27th minute after Jessie Taylors’ wayward back pass to keeper Laura O’Sullivan was intercepted.

Cardiff City were controversially not awarded a penalty decision after what seemed a blatant handball by the London Bees defence in the 38th minute.

The handball controversy continued after the visitors broke down the Cardiff City defence, immediately after a goal line stop by Caitlin Williams prevented the visitors from doubling their lead.

A series of late saves at the tail end of the first half by O’Sullivan kept the game competitive.

Cardiff City made two half time substitutions with Chloe Lloyd and Grace Horrell-Thomas making way for Carys Bufton and Cerys Jones.

Cardiff City started the second half strongly with a period of sustained pressure which saw Williams’s shot fly over the bar.

Poole equalised for the hosts after a handball in the box by the bees defence gifted Cardiff City Ladies a penalty.

Gauvain put the hosts in front on the 71st minute after Poole delivered a curling free-kick towards the back post from the edge of the box.

Cardiff went down to 10 shortly after going in front after Ellie Sargent received a second yellow card.

The visitors equalised with the last kick of the game from the penalty spot, securing they go back home to North London with an important point.

Cardiff’s next game in the FAWNL is away at Rugby on the 14th of January
